For those of you who aren’t from the Philadelphia area you may not have heard that a prominent baker, the Tasty Baking Company (makers of Tastykake) is in trouble.  In May Wish-Cake mentioned the company’s move to a new facility here.  The company, started in 1914, is quite an employer and fabric of the community.  Due to declining sales, increased flour costs and an expensive new facility the company owes lots of money.  The company was recently given 6 months to figure out how to pay back the millions of dollars.  Speculation is that the company will try to sell, merge with another company or re-finance its debt.  Let’s hope for a win for the people of Philadelphia. Losing this company would be sad for many many reasons.  Keep your eyes open for the final decision around June 30, 2011.  Our fingers are crossed.

In the midst of all the craziness we hope you can take the time to appreciate the season.

Perhaps we’ve had our noses too much to the grindstone because we didn’t know today is National Free Shipping Day!  If you visit the site here you can search for stores that are participating in the excitement!  Unfortunately Wish-Cake doesn’t ship.  But take advantage and go buy something!  We would have waited to purchase a lot of our goodies if we had only known this day was coming!  Enjoy!

If you’re looking for stocking stuffer ideas please remember the cupcake!  Perpetual Kid has a whole page full of cupcake options here.  The Effervescent Cupcake Drink Tablets intrigued us!  We don’t want people to stop eating cupcakes and only drinking cupcakes but the tablets may be worth a try!

Celebrate it well!

We’ve mentioned in previous blog entries that cupcakes are everywhere – in stores, in commercials, in advertisements, pictured on products.  In fact, we’ve started to feel surprised if we don’t see them while milling around in our daily routine.

Last week, however, a fun random cupcake sighting actually surprised us!  While en route to a meeting we saw the sign pictured below in the lobby of a large Connecticut business.  We couldn’t miss seeing the sign.  It clearly advertises The Cupcake Truck – a clever New Haven cupcake business.  We know they’re probably not the first cupcake truck business but they’re the first truck we’ve seen to advertise in and make cupcakes mobile enough for the lobby of a large corporate business.  We admire (and are a bit envious of) their logistical talent!

We recently experimented with some holiday flavors – Red Velvet, Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Icing & peppermint candies, Orange Chip and Vanilla.  Today we made another holiday flavor – gingerbread.  It’s been fun to experiment.  We may add a flavor or 2 to our site!

This is a really interesting idea and there are some very creative folks out there!  I’m interested in seeing what everyone submits.  The inspiration cupcake photos are amazing.  They can be viewed here: Jelly Belly cupcake examples.   The website also shows contestant submissions.  Cupcakes can be submitted until July 31, 2011.  If Wish-Cake sends one in we’ll be sure to let you know!
